Event: Cardboard Box City - POSTPONED

The Board of Directors have decided to cancel the upcoming Cardboard City event. The Board felt it best to allocate the limited resources, volunteers, and staff to upcoming projects and events and to continue its focus on volunteer recruitment and congregation recruitment. Planning committee will meet 4 to 6 times between Sept 10 and the event on Nov 8th -  next meeting is Sept 10th, 5:30pm at the offices of Family Promise for about 1 hour.  Meetings will be approx. 1 hour in length.  Middle and high school students are ENCOURAGED to join, and volunteer hours can be tracked and awarded for community service/scholarship hours.  Please call the office at 952-1800 OR email us at SrqFamilyPromise@aol.com  to join!

What IS Car & Cardboard City?

* Car & Cardboard City is an annual event that Family Promise holds to promote awareness of family homelessness in our community, while also raising funds for our program to help families in this type of crisis. This is our 3rd year holding this event.  It is an an afternoon/evening and overnight "camp out style" event, where participants bring and design a CARDBOARD BOX to sleep in overnight, while remembering homeless kids and families.  It's an OUTDOOR event. We have contests for the box creations, dinner, live entertainment, music, games, and an outdoor, large screen movie.    This year we've added CARS to the event, for those who would prefer to sleep over in their car instead.

WHO can attend?

Anyone.  This event is fun for anyone.  Families, singles, teens, kids (with parents or guardians).  We strongly encourage groups from schools, clubs, and youth groups!

What date and what's the times?

This year's event is Saturday, Nov. 8th.  gates open at 3pm.  You can arrive then or anytime after.  It concludes at sunrise the next morning, Nov 9th (clean up and depart).   (for those wishing only to attend the evening events, and not stay over night,there is an donation option for those hours only).

Cost?

This is a fundraiser to help homeless families.  Participants are asked to pay $25 entrance fee, and are encouraged to find 10, $10 sponsors also.  (PRIZE for one who collects MOST sponsor $).   Those just wanting to come for the evening entertainment are asked to donate $5, (if you'd like dinner included, a $10 donation).

What will be involved?  What will we do there?

 
Be creative and bring a cardboard box (or 2 or 3) and BUILD a "home" to sleep in overnight.  Decorate it!  Design it!  Build it however you'd like.   We will have contests for biggest, most creative, etc. (categories to be determined).  A dinner will be provided early evening, and entertainment (musicians/music, etc - still being lined up), games, later in the evening.  We'll show a late-night movie on a big screen as well.  It's a FUN night to just hang with your friends and maybe meet some new ones, all while spreading awareness of kids with no home in our city.  Sleep in your box (or car) overnight, and at sunrise we'll clean up, and have a light breakfast as you head off.

Is this a safe event?

Yes.  We're using a big area next to the Boys & Girls Club that is fully fenced in.  We will have big outdoor lighting,and the use of the INDOOR restrooms at the Boys & Girls Club.  Volunteers will be on hand and attending the gate (which will be closed and blocked off around 12 midnight).

What else should I bring besides a BOX (or car)?

Bring your FAMILY & FRIENDS to participate!  Its more fun with family and friends.  Bring a pillow, blanket, etc., a jacket in case it's cool.  Maybe a small flashlight.  You're welcome to bring snacks, but we will also have some simple snacks and soda for sale there, so you might want to bring a few bucks. ($1 items).  Bring your cell phone, but TRY to only use it if needed.  It's a good time to just CHAT with others, like a camp-out.  You can bring PAINT, markers, tape, etc - to help create your BOX.
